Nylon Material Selection & Quality

Choosing the right nylon grade is as important as the manufacturing method. Moisture
absorption, shrinkage, and mechanical properties vary significantly across the PA family.

PA 6/6 for maximum stiffness and heat resistance in structural and underhood applications

PA 12 for dimensional stability in humid environments — lowest moisture absorption of the nylon family

GF30 for 2 to 3x stiffness increase over unfilled nylon — gears, structural brackets, high-load components

Pre-production drying to below 0.2% moisture — mandatory for defect-free nylon processing

Moisture Management in Nylon Processing

Nylon is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the environment, which changes its dimensions and mechanical properties. Parts must be designed with moisture allowance in tight-tolerance fits, and pellets must be dried to below 0.2% moisture before molding.

Glass-Filled Nylon for Structural Applications

Adding 30% glass fiber to PA 6/6 increases stiffness 2 to 3 times, raises heat deflection temperature to over 240 degrees C, and reduces moisture absorption by approximately 40%.

For structural gears, brackets, and load-bearing components, GF30 PA 6/6 is often the correct specification — not unfilled nylon whose properties drift with moisture content.
